Study shows cigarette additives could be making it - A new UCLA study shows that at least 100 of the 599 documented cigarette additives have "pharmacological" actions, many of which enhance or maintain the delivery of nicotine and may increase the addictiveness of cigarettes.
"Wake-Up Pill" Under Study to Treat Patients with Bipolar Disorder - A preliminary study of 85 patients with bipolar disorder shows that a drug used to treat patients with sleep disorders might also control the depressive symptoms associated with bipolar disorder.
Highlights from the August 2007 Journal of the American Dietetic Association - The August 2007 issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association contains articles and research studies you may find of interest.
Cost-effective method for gene silencing is featured in Cold Spring Harbor Protocols - The August, 2007 issue of Cold Spring Harbor Protocols includes a cost-effective approach for generating silencing RNAs, called esiRNAs, to efficiently target virtually any gene in mammalian cells.
JRRD releases volume 44, issue 3 - This press release contains a list of articles featured in the current issue of Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development.
Aggressive therapy best for certain AML patients - A new study suggests that acute leukemia patients whose cancer cells show a genetic change that usually predicts a swift return of the disease following remission may remain disease-free longer when given aggressive therapy. The findings apply to people with acute myeloid leukemia whose cancer cells have normal-looking chromosomes and a gene mutation called MLL-PTD.
Molecule blocks gene, sheds light on liver cancer - New research shows how a particular small molecule blocks the activity of a cancer-suppressing gene, allowing liver cancer cells to grow and spread. This molecule is a microRNA, a recently discovered class of tiny molecules used by cells to help control the kinds and amounts of proteins they make. More than 250 different microRNAs have been discovered, and several have been linked to cancer.
Automated technique paves way for nanotechnology's industrial revolution - In an assist in the quest for ever smaller electronic devices, Duke University engineers have adapted a decades-old computer-aided design and manufacturing process to reproduce nanosize structures with features on the order of single molecules.

North American Lichen Mapping
Come join in this award-winning project as we map the lichens across the country. The Lichen project is the focus for student-scientists partnerships this month. Join us now as we continue to map Lichens across North America!

Lichens and SO2
Help us explore the environmental impacts of Sulfur Dioxide by studying the density and diversity of lichens
Keeping An Eye on Ozone
Check out your local Ground Level Ozone readings with Ecobadges and Milkweed plants.
Stream Monitoring
Join in the fun of testing your nearby creek with chemical, biological, and visual surveys.
UVB and DNA
Help us investigate the link between the sun's harmful UVB rays and cell damage.
Global Warming
Carbon Dioxide is considered to be the primary compound of the Green House Gases. Help us track the changes in these gases by counting the stomata of leafs.
Winter Bird Survey
Join thousands of citizens and schools for this annual survey of winter birds visiting school and home feeders.
How does your cookie crumble?
Help us decide which commercial cookie brands hold up the best!
Out! Darn Spot!
The Project Director has spilled mustard on his shirt and he needs your help to get it out.
Digital Monarch Watch
As the digital branch of the Monarch Watch we collect your butterfly data online.
Tardigrades
See the tiny "water-bears" of moss and lichen. They'll amaze you!
Cultural Migration
Join us in the study of a historical immigration.
Amphibian Biomonitoring
We're using amphibians to help determine the effects of environmental pollutants
Driving Me Crazy
How fast are those cars really going? Help us take a speeder count in your neighborhood.
Particulate Monitoring
Come help us assess air quality by examining the contents of the air you breath.
Construction Function
Take a look with us at basic building principles and design.
Phenology
Help us bring in spring each year as the "green wave" passes across the US.
Green Clean
The abundant use of perchloroethlyene in Dry Cleaning have serious health and ecological effects. Join us to contribute information about the dry cleaning in your area
